A good article, but I have a slightly different view. 17/19" monitors are larger than typical notebooks. A more accurate point of view is dimensions in pixels. Most displays are about 1280 to 1024 measured horizontally, with 800 as the minimum. So it's a tradeoff between never having to scroll horizontally, and a good layout at 1280. I like 900 to 1000 pixals as a good balance between 1280/1024. Printing is different. The fix for printing is CSS.
